Steering Committee
The purpose of the pageant is to “Be the Change” to stop the violence in Oakland and to empower and encourage the future of girls, prevent them from becoming victims of violence, to become college educated, promote community leadership, and to be competitive in the today’s job market. A Go Fund Me (www.GoFundMe.com/iaah4o) account has been set up for donations.
Each contender received a computer donated by Courageous Women Association, and two were hired for jobs at the event.
All 30 girls received gifts and a computer. The teen girls were partnered with 30 business women to support them as Godmother/Mentor Sponsors. They attended 8 weeks of workshops on college prep, law enforcement, social life skills, internet training, yoga/meditating, finance, and local /national affairs. They were judged on their volunteer work, writing, verbal communication skills with the judges, and the content of their character.
Produced by an Oakland family Paula and Maurice Welsh, Founder, their daughter Celebrity Chef Nikki Shaw as Mistress of Ceremony and Event Chair wife of Oakland’s NBA Associate Head Coach Brian Shaw of the Los Angeles LAKERS, Granddaughter Bianca Shaw, Youth Liaison, and sponsored by family owned business Center Stage Salon. Assembly Member Nancy Skinner, Mayor Libby Schaff, Dr. Elnora Webb, Executive Vice Chancellor for Peralta Colleges, and Nancy O’Malley, Oakland D.A., were among the speakers and judges.
